About Me

007_18A.JPG

I was born and raised in New England and joined the Navy after a brief stint at college.  While I was in the Navy I was fortunate enough to travel many places around the world (Spain, United Kingdom, Iceland, Japan, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc.).  No matter where I traveled, I would always be connecting with animals in one form or another.  I worked in shelters in England and Cuba as well as numerous places in the United States.  I also always seemed to be where animals were in need (a lonely lost duck in Virginia Beach, stray lost kittens in Okinawa, Japan, hurt dog in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, drowning kitty in Key West, FL, etc.).  My heart goes out to animals in need.

My life has always included animals, whether as pets, living with them, or working with them in shelters or pet sitting.  I grew up in a family who looked upon their pets, not just as animals or lower beings, but as members of the family (not that they would join us at the dining room table - although I did ask on several occassions), and included them with love and care.  I was raised to believe that you treat animals with tender loving care, and with discipline (as you would a child).

I am a very responsible person (dependable, dedicated, hard working, intelligent, honest, and loyal) who can handle any situation that arises.  I hold the traditional core values that I learned at home and in the Navy:  Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

I have many professional and personal references and will be glad to provide them upon your request.

"Marty is a really fun sitter...she's the best."

"I felt totally relaxed with Marty."

Many people have been calling me regarding boarding their animals.  Unfortunately, I am unable to accomodate those requests at this time.  However, my vision is that at some point (six months, a year, two years?) down the road, I will have a place where I will have that option.

Because I am relatively new to the area, and am building my business, it will take me some more time to save up the money to allow me to do this...

Until then, I will do what I can to assist and accomodate you and your family members.

Quotes

"If all the beasts were gone, man would die from loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast, happens to the man."
        --Chief Seattle

"Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other."
        --Dr Louis J.Camuti (1893-1981)

"Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character; and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man."
        --Arthur Schopenhauer (philosopher)

"The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different."
        --Hippocrates (philosopher)

"By ethical conduct toward all creatures, we enter into a spiritual relationship with the universe."
      --Albert Schweitzer

"Love animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harass them, don't deprive them of their happiness, don't work against God's intent. Man, do not pride yourself on superiority to animals; they are without sin, and you, with your greatness, defile the earth by your appearance on it, and leave the traces of your foulness after you--alas, it is true of almost every one of us!"
        --Fyodor Dostoyevsky (novelist)

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us 'universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
        --Albert Einstein

"Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."
--Saint Francis of Assisi (mystic and preacher)

"A dog wags its tail with all its heart."  --Martin Buxbaum

I offer the benefits of years of experience gained from previous pet sitting positions, as well as many years of professional and "life" experiences.

After much traveling and living in so many places, California was always my favorite state-side location.   However, a wonderful, dear friend turned me on to Santa Cruz a couple of years ago, and it would not stop calling me, until I moved here.  Although my animal work is mainly in Santa Cruz County, I am willing to travel farther with compensation for mileage and time.

For me to care for your animals is a gift.  I believe we are better people for having pets (yes, I guess I am bit of a 'pet snob').  But more importantly, I believe in the human-animal connection.  We are all earthlings and it's best we treat all living beings with honor and respect.
